Official Press Release
Jim McCune, current Council Member for Pierce County’s 3rdCouncil District, announces his candidacy for the open senate seat in the 2nd Legislative District being vacated by retiring Senator Randi Becker.
Today, more than ever, we need experienced leadership in our elected officials. I ran my own successful business for over 50 years while serving 8 years in the State House of Representatives and going on 8 years at the Pierce County Council.
As a council member, I chaired Public Safety and focused on fighting the human trafficking of women and girls and the illicit drug use that poisons our communities. I worked to fund a property crimes task force to crack down on nuisance properties and the squatters that invade vacant homes and private properties. Currently, I’m working on a retail theft ordinance which creates a task force to identify and arrest retail theft rings.
Recently, I helped direct recreational funds to the Yelm Prairie Line Trail system that will connect the Yelm-Tenino Trail to Roy and generate revenue. Also, I’m a strong advocate of 4-H programs and small county fairs that play a big role in our communities for families, as well as our local farmers who are critical for feeding us and contributing to local tourism.
As a former representative, I served 8 years on committees maintaining that we remain firm to live within our means. I will always fight for lower taxes and for principles over politics.
The State’s exponential spending habit and its increasing bloated bureaucracy must be stopped, including their unfunded mandates to counties. Education needs to return its focus to knowledge and local control, not state mandate of adult sex-ed programs taught in kindergarten. It is wrong for the State to sexualize our children.
I am well prepared to work in the legislature getting our government back to its core responsibilities. I look forward to returning to the legislature and serving the citizens.
